We had a beautiful day at Earthbound Farms today picking out pumpkins! So much fun, cornhusk doll making, pumpkin stacking contest, and lots of yummy gourmet pumpkin treats. Not only was it unusually warm and sunny but it smelled really good with all the flowers and pumpkins.

I took Sorren to a place called My Museum today. He had so much fun. It's a place that has lots of different exhibits and activities for kids. Sorren's favorite was the boat. He didn't want to do anything else!! I finally got him out of the boat and on to the ambulance and firetruck exhibits. At the end they had a playhouse full of all Sesame Street characters, Sorren's favorite!

He had so much fun that by the end of the day he crashed pretty hard!

We decided at the last minute to head up to San Francisco and go to the zoo. Sorren had a blast. He was squealing and screaming at all the animals. I think he especially loved the exotic birds, the penguins, and the sound of the sea lions.

Sorren is growing and changing SO fast. He's like a little person now. His new thing at daycare is to put as many toys on his arms as possible. It's a mixture of plastic rings and soft stacking blocks!

Today was the day it felt like we live with a 1 1/2 year old. Sorren has been so mellow and content just laying around and playing with toys....until today. Overnight he learned how to climb up on the couch, put John's shoes on, and eat real macaroni and cheese for dinner! What happened to baby Sorren?

Wilder Ranch, Santa Cruz

It was another awesome weekend on the central coast! We went to one of my favorite places, Wilder Ranch in Santa Cruz. John and I used to ride out there quite a bit before we got married and moved to Monterey.

Here's what the state park website has to say about it:

The park has 34 miles of hiking, biking and equestrian trails winding through coastal terraces and valleys. Several restored buildings once belonging to the Wilder family are preserved. The park has tours and living history demonstrations to help visitors explore the history of early ranchers and farmers along the Central Coast. The site was originally the main rancho supplying Santa Cruz Mission. It later became a successful and innovative dairy ranch. Surrounding grounds include Victorian homes, gardens, and historic adobe.

While the rest of the country is buried in snow we are enjoying the great outdoors this weekend!

John bought Sorren some old Fisher Price Adventure People. Sorren seems to think they're pretty cool and John gets to reminisce about his childhood.

We also found a super cute rocking horse. Sorren will ride it for a minutes and then he says "down". He likes standing next to it and rocking it more than anything.

Sorren got a table and chair set for Christmas from his grandmom and pop pop. We finally put it together and you can tell he likes being a big boy sitting at his table. He can get down pretty good but getting up is taking some practice!

Belated Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! A lot has happened in the last 6 weeks,from flying to New Jersey for Christmas to Sorren getting chicken pox, to getting a new family wagon. Sorren's surgery was a success! He's healing fast. He took his first steps by himself holding on to one of the couches in the surgery center's waiting area. That was a big surprise!

The day after you wouldn't even have known Sorren had surgery. He's already back to his usual antics!

Our Little Sweet Pea......

could not have been cuter today at his doctor's appointment. John and I took Sorren up to Stanford for another follow up for his VSD. I packed a huge bag full of stuff I thought we might need since we were there for 3 hours last time. I was pleasantly surprised when we we were ushered in to a room for his echocardiogram after a brief visit with a nurse to get Sorren's vitals. He weighs 15 1/2 pounds, that's a pound and a half more than he was about a month and a half ago.

During the "echo" Sorren was laying shirtless on a big fluffy pillow with his arms above his head, watching a Baby Einstein video. He definitely made himself at home. We had a great technician who took about 20 minutes to get all the pictures she needed.

Dr. Murphy, Sorren's Cardiologist, met with us to let us know that the hole in Sorren's heart is really small. He said he can hardly hear a murmur and doesn't need to see him for 2 years!

Whew! We can cross that worry off our list!

We are all doing great! Sorren is eating and sleeping really well. He has a visit with the Cardiologist next Tuesday. It should be his final follow up or at least for a few years.

It's officially summer on the peninsula. The fog has settled in and its really, really gray around here. Fingers crossed, the sun will come out SOON!

I was inspired to take a knitting class after Sorren's head got too big for his favorite brown beanie. I made the green one below. Sorren seems to dig it!

It's hard to believe its been 7+ months already since Sorren was born. He is doing really well... he is starting to laugh alot and screech for joy - Trudy calls him "The Seagull" . He is getting big in a hurry and is much more interested in checking out new things and tryin to get in motion all the time. He is starting to eat rice ceral, avocado and yams and seems to be getting the hang of that too. We are enjoying every moment with him and starting to get used to this parenting thing. We cant wait for everybody to see him again and for others to finally meet him! He already appears to have an eye for the ladies and appears to be sweet on a certain 9 month old little girl! He is too precious... sometimes i want to climb into his crib and snuggle with him. I am going to attach some recent pics and will write some more soon.

My parents came down from Sacramento on Friday to spend some time with us. Mark helped me put together Sorren's baby Einstein activity center (thanks Jenny Jones!). He's definitely tired of his bouncer, he's been trying to wiggle down and slide out of it. Sorren definitely needed something more stimulating because when we put him in the activity center he went nuts! He was so excited and immediately started figuring out how everything worked! He's so cute!

Sorren started rolling over! He totally caught me off guard. I haven't been reading that much about the different milestones so when I put him down on his stomach and came back to see him on his back, it took me a full minute to figure out what happened! At first I thought maybe I put him on his back and only thought I had put him on his stomach. So I turned him over and put him on stomach and sure enough, he slowly rolled over on his side and then kind of fell over on his back. It seemed like this wasn't the first time he had done that, so I'm guessing he's maybe done it at daycare. Too cute!

Well its been 4 months since Sorren came into this world and I am pretty sure there is a glitch in the time space continuem... i cant believe its been that long. The crazy part is that he has been like a dream... sweet, easy to care for... already sleeping through the night and just a happy little dude who apparently doesnt have a care in the world... he just wants to coo, smile, eat, sleep and play with his mom and dad... i feel like the luckiest guy on the planet to have such an amazing wife and little boy! The crazy part is that these 4 months have been really challenging for us, not just in all the attendent lessons first time parents have to learn and all the fears that need to be confronted but all kinds of little hurdles piled on top of that stuff. Trudy was sick soon after his birth and hospitalized twice in Sorren's first 2 months... i was hospitalized with a kidney stone, Sorren was diagnosed with a VSD that initially appeared to be serious enough that they were talking about heart surgery so the poor guy was taking trips to Stanford to be poked and prodded by the Docs and his crew... luckily he came through with flying colors and it appears he will be cleared all together after his next appointment with the cardiologist. We had some difficulty with crazy neighbors and were burglarized and ended up breaking a lease to escape the insanity... work was more stressful than i thought i could handle, a couple of guys who are like brothers to me fell into rough times and ended up in rehab... i could go on but i want to get back to the thing that keeps popping up to the surface for me... Sorren was the one thing we could channel our love, will, hope, faith and energy towards... knowing he needed our best no matter what the situation. He shined a light on all of the chaos and enabled us to walk through it. It is amazing how everything comes back to him for me--- its like everything/ everyone else become extras on a set but hes the one my thoughts, actions and heart points back to... what a beautiful gift to love something like that... i teared up the other day after thinking about how my parents must have felt after we lost Brian... and it was like a door opened i never knew existed... a new layer of understanding revealed. All i really want to do is be a good husband, father, son, friend, worker and citizen of the world... and give my boy every opportunity to make his dreams come true. I hope that my best is good enough and those of you who have touched my life will continue to support me along the way... so many folks have been there for us the past 4 months, allowing us to be there for Sorren and each other-- thank you to each and every one of you... Debra for being there time and time again, Mark for making us laugh, Mom and Dad for flying out and helping us through a rough patch,Ray for listening to me ramble and standing by my side, Aaron for giving me inspiration I could do this, Suzie for being a great neighbor, Lance n Shawn for reminding me what courage really is, Jeremy, Stacy, Dave and Linda for offering your friendship and support, Margie for checkin in and sharing, Caitie and Margie for being there for both of us, Rob for being like a rock that i can go to without judgment, Chops and Nora for being good examples and all the chats, Lisa for being there from the very beginning for us,Daniel for being back in my life again and the super cool musicmaker, JB for making our hospital stay extra special, Jerry, Leslie and the kids for your guidance, gifts , patience and understanding, Aunt Jan and Uncle John for the tastycakes ( send more ! ) Kalib for keepin it real, all the baseball guys for making me laugh and letting me escape it all for awhile, my coworkers for their support and kind gifts...Jen L for being an example and being a great mom, Ken for being patient, flexible and providing all my tech support (lol) i could go on and on for days.. if i missed ya i will make it up to ya i promise! Know that i appreciate each and every one of your contributions to my family... we couldnt do it without ya. And last but not least.. to my lovely wife Trudy- I am amazed each and every day by what an amazing mother you are to Sorren and how patient and tolerant you are of me along the way. It's already the middle of January and I still haven't posted any Christmas pics! Lots of stuff has been going on, we've moved and now have lots of room for Koda and Sorren. I went back to work January 4th and the transition was surprisingly smooth but exhausting! Sorren is loving daycare. He gets so much stimulation that he comes home, takes a bath, and goes right to sleep! He's now sleeping through the night except for the occasional 1am feeding. After enduring "wake up calls" every 2-3 hours, this is a piece of cake. Sorren is growing so fast. He's kicking everything he can get his feet on. He's trying to roll over, sit up and is now as big as his sock monkey. I've posted some miscellanous pictures from Christmas and from our new place.

Time flies even faster when you have a newborn! We can't believe Sorren is 7 weeks old already. He's really starting to smile and interact when we play with him. He now weighs almost 9 pounds and is growing so fast. Enjoy the new pics!

We wanted to check in an let everyone know Sorren is doing well. He is a happy healthy growing boy and is now well over 6 pounds. The endless parade of appointments has passed and we are starting to develop a decent routine that basically looks like : Sorren eats, Sorren poops and pees, Sorren gets changed, we hold him and marvel at how fast we have fallen in love with him and then he sleeps again... with some crying mixed in there.

His little cheeks are starting to fill out and he appears to be getting more adorable by the minute... Trudy and I are getting rest, sometimes in shifts and both are enjoying our time with him and glad we are both home full time for a little while... we feel blessed to have the support of friends and family along the way. Trudys folks have been out a few times and my folks are coming out on the 20th from Jersey for a week to meet Sorren. He has had some visitors and seems to handle them well... we hope all of you get to meet him soon enough. Here are some new pics...

On 9/28/09 at 10:09 pm Trudy delivered our son, a 5 pound 14 oz boy now named Sorren Brian Sharp !

Technically, he was delivered within 30 minutes of getting to the hospital and was 5 days early...

but came exactly when he was supposed to if you ask us. Sorren is like a gift from the gods...

We were in the hospital for 2 nights and got back home late this afternoon. Trudy was amazing and is feeling really good now. I am pretty exhausted and running on fumes but have never known such peace or joy... it all feels like a dream.

We wanted to share a few pics with all of you and thank each and every one of you for being a part of our family . Without the encouragement, love and support of our 'community' none of this is possible for us.

We hope you all get to meet Sorren soon enough.... until next time be well and send some 'good juju' out into the universe for someone you love.

Labor and Delivery 101

John and I went to the first of a two session birthing class this weekend and all I can say is WHOA! I knew they would show us the video of the woman giving birth but I had no idea they were going to show us THREE! Despite the video play by play, it was informative and surprisingly, I left feeling more confident about labor and delivery than I did before. Ironically, the nurse emphasized the key to a successful delivery is to relax. I'm not a rocket scientist but some of the women in those videos didn't look very relaxed.

It was interesting to talk to other pregnant women in the class and to see how some of the other "dads-to-be" reacted to a lot of the information that was given. I was also surprised to learn that all the rooms are one stop shopping. Your assigned room is the same room that you deliver in and they never take the baby out of the room unless there are complications. They do everything right there, weighing, cleaning, and baby monitoring. Our next session will include more breathing exercises (tired of that already), an overview of options for pain management (YAY!), and a tour of the hospital. Hopefully no more videos!
